Jay Z includes an image of Cox’s important work Marcus Garvey’s Golden Rule in his autobiography Decoded.
This illustrative text series from Renee Cox addresses key issues around race and justice. The text we see on what appears to be prison walls in part calls forth imagery of the Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey whose philosophy for equality inspired Cox. “Garvey wanted to create Black pride, uphold it, and uplift it to improve the lives of Blacks all around the world,” Cox explained.
As well as being included in Jay Z’s autobiography Cox’s work from this series was featured in a major exhibition in France at the Mémorial ACTe museum between November 2016 - April 2017 (Credit P.6).
